Others choice to fly to Hanoi (180km) or Hai Phong (80km) airport and take a road trip to the Bay. 

By Road:
1.By car
The most popular way to get to Halong Bay is by road, from Ha Noi which follows Highway 5  and turn left at the foot of Thanh Tri bridge, reach to high way 1 along this way and Pay attention to sign port with Bac Ninh province and turn right, keep going straight and passed by Bac Ninh and Hai Duong provinces you will arrive in Quang Ninh,seeing  Tuan Chau Island, Bai Chay Road and Hon Gai Bridge, most cruise trips will arrange transfer from your hotel to the pier for you (either cruise bus or private car). An average trip without traffic will take at least 4 hours for one way. 
2.By Bus
If you are travelling on your own and want to save cost, taking the bus from Hanoi to Halong can be a good thrill. From Gia Lam bus station on Nguyen Van Cu Street, you can take Hoang Long express which departs every 15 minutes from the station. It will take about 3-4 hours to reach the pier. The cost is about 120 000 VND. After that, there are plenty of cruise operators that you can choose from to hop on. This way of transport is exciting partly because you get to be part of the daily commune of the locals, who come and go to Hanoi. Additionally, with someone who has no fix schedule, taking the bus is very convenient. However, this type is more suitable for those who are more familiar with Vietnam conditions or has adventurous streak; for first time tourists, it is not recommended. 
3.By Booking Tours
Of course, the most popular way to go from Hanoi to Halong Bay is to book a tour. Tours from us are cheap and available every day. They will take care of your transportation, cruise and accommodation. There will also be a guide that will help explain things along the way. Depending on the different tours operators, all of them will provide shuttle bus that starts from your hotel in the Hanoi Old Quarter. Some will also have private car option for you if you do not want to join 20 others on a shuttle bus. This will increase the cost but also comfort. Going on tours is recommended for family, group of friends and anybody who want to have a fuss free trip. An average cost for a 2 days tour is about $ 70, $ 90 or $ 110. 4. By Motocycle
Once you are in Vietnam, you can reach basically everywhere by motor cycle, even at the most remote places. This type is the utmost adventurous and thrilling of all. Since Halong bay is only 170 km away from Hanoi and the road is quite straight forward, one can rent a good bike from the Old quarter, a map and good riding skill to make the trip. It is advisable that you should embark on this with a small group of friends to support each other on the way, especially in case a bike brakes down. Careful inspection of bike before the trip is crucial to ensure a safest trip. An average price for bike rental is about $20/day. However, it will take slightly longer than bus or car to reach Halong and is considerably more tiring. Thus unless you plan to stay long in the area, riding the bike to Halong is not very worth it.

By Air :
You can take a flight from Danang, Nha Trang and Ho Chi Minh City, you can fly either to Hanoi or Hai Phong with Cat Bi Airport and get a car transfer to Halong Bay. From other Southeast Asia countries, you also need to fly into one of these two airports to get access to Halong Bay. 

By Train :

By Helicopter :
if  do not have much time, you can also get to Halong Bay on helicopter which takes about 1.5 hour and it is only possible from Hanoi. This service is exclusively run by us  and it is quite a costly option to reach Halong Bay.For this option, you must book as soon as possible. More details..

By Sea ( From International Cruise Ships )
If you are traveling with an International Cruise Ships such as Celebrity Cruise, Millennium Cruise, Regent Voyager, it is likely that you will be docking in one of piers and Cai Lan interational port. There is a total of 7 piers which receive both freight ships and tourist ships so it is very helpful if you know which specific pier you will be stopping at. 
From Cai Lan to Bai Chay pier (which hosts Sails,  Cruiser) it takes about 15 minutes. From Cai Lan to Tuan Chau Island, it will take about 30minutes. Transfer can be arranged as you arrive by calling a taxi, but to save time, it is better to book cruise tours with pick up at pier in advance..

Normally, these cruises will allow you a day to visit Halong Bay. You can book a day cruise trip (which normally lasts between 4 and 8 hours, depending on your arrival time) that includes transfer from where you stop.

If you have more than 1 day to spend in Halong Bay you can book a trip where you can stay on board of a smaller cruises in Halong Bay or in a hotel in mainland. It is advisable that you arrange these tours in advance as it may sometime be difficult to decide as you land without knowing which junk is a good one to travel with in Halong Bay.
